US President Barack Obama explains the concept of Charter School

On March 26th 2009 at the White House, US President Barack Obama explained the concept of Charter School during a Town Hall Open Question Session. Mr. Obama reiterated the concept that charter schools are public schools typically operated by non-profit institutions. Mr. Obama explained that charter schools bring enough flexibility to allow special purpose such as arts, sciences, sports.

“Now, there are some charter schools doing a great job and you’re seeing huge increases in student performance”.

Another point raised by Mr. Obama is the fact that charter schools are non-selective: they have to admit any students on the long waiting list instead of admitting the students have highest scores.

“What charters do is giving an opportunity for experimentation and then do potential success and we want to encourage that .”
